[00:01:15] wood on her head, walking barefoot on the road. Meanwhile men smoked cigarettes and strolled
[00:01:20] around the street, comfortable in shoes. French Gates did her own research and realized what she saw
[00:01:26] was quite common in Africa. This experience pushed her to start paying attention to the inequality for
[00:01:32] women from poor areas. It also gave her a direction for the foundation to work towards when she created
[00:01:38] it seven years later. The foundation's first goal was to save children's lives by vaccinating them
[00:01:44] from various diseases, completely free of charge. While working at the vaccine clinics,
[00:01:49] French Gates met many mothers who were overwhelmed from the unpaid labor of childcare, often
[00:01:54] exacerbated by the stress of having no contraception to control when or how many children they could
[00:01:58] have based on their resources. Linking their experiences to French Gates' own experience of having
[00:02:04] children, this observation further propelled her to focus on women's contraception. During her visits
[00:02:10] to other regions, French Gates discovered many other difficulties in women's lives, such as
[00:02:15] maternal and child health, the right to education, circumcision, child marriage and women's career
[00:02:20] development. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, alongside many other organizations and individuals,
[00:02:27] are working to make a difference. French Gates put together what she had experienced to create this

[00:02:57] Of the many issues in the fight for women's rights and equality, one of the most important as
[00:03:01] contraception, specifically a women's right and ability to decide to bear children.
[00:03:07] Contr reception may seem insignificant for many who have easy and affordable access to contraceptive
[00:03:12] methods, but for women in poverty, the lack of contraception can lead to having more children than
[00:03:16] they can afford. Therefore, to help improve living conditions, family planning was the logical
[00:03:22] first step for French Gates. French Gates visited a charity called Sure Start, which trains
[00:03:28] healthcare workers to assist women who give birth at home, assure their health, and encourage them
[00:03:32] to go to specialist clinics for labor. During the visit, French Gates met a young mother who was
[00:03:38] very fond of the project, which gave her confidence in the program. But when French Gates asked if she
[00:03:44] planned to have more children, the mother's expression fell. After a long silence, she told
[00:03:49] French Gates that she didn't want another child. The young mother didn't even know how she would
[00:03:54] raise the one that had just been born. She asked French Gates if she was willing to adopt her son.
[00:04:00] This personal and meaningful incident helped French Gates realize the importance of family
[00:04:05] planning for women even more. Not long after this, French Gates paid a visit to a health center
[00:04:10] in Republic of Malawi. There, she saw women lining up for contraceptive injections and spoke to them,
[00:04:17] learning from their needs. Soon after, French Gates co-sponsored an international summit on
[00:04:22] family planning, gathering influential leaders, activists, and experts to discuss this topic.
[00:04:28] She told the conference about visiting a slum in Corgocho, Nairobi, where she listened to women talk
[00:04:33] about birth control. One young mother told French Gates that moms want the best for their children,
[00:04:39] and birth control allows them to care more for each child when the living conditions don't,
[00:04:43] which reflected French Gates' own experience as a mother.
[00:04:47] French Gates also brought in Jeno Tai, who grew up in Corgocho as one of seven children,
[00:04:52] and experienced first-hand the significance of family planning.
[00:04:55] She told the audience that without family planning, she would have been married and had a family
[00:05:00] at an early age and would have been too busy raising a family to share her speech on stage.
[00:05:05] The summit was a great success. French Gates raised billions of dollars,
[00:05:10] shoring up efforts from developed and developing countries alike.
[00:05:14] The meeting promoted making contraceptives more available and accessible in the 69 poorest
[00:05:19] countries in the world. French Gates is not alone in her fight.
[00:05:24] Other organizations and individuals are also working to promote birth control programs
[00:05:28] and protect women's self-determined reproductive rights. For example, in 2012, Pia Coyotano,
[00:05:35] a female senator in the Philippines, pushed the Supreme Court of the Philippines to pass a
[00:05:40] reproductive health bill allowing and unifying the legal distribution of contraceptives across
[00:05:44] the country. Before the law was enacted, women in the Philippines faced various religious,
[00:05:50] social, financial and legal obstacles in their path to obtain contraceptives that differed
[00:05:54] across the country. That year 15 Filipino women died every single day from childbirth complications.
[00:06:02] Since the bill has passed, the number has drastically reduced.
[00:06:06] In addition to promoting contraception, French Gates also used her foundation to save the
[00:06:11] lives of children under the age of five, therefore saving the lives of mothers and poverty who
[00:06:15] often die in childbirth. One of the ways she did that was to fund Dr. Vishwajit Kumar's program,
[00:06:21] Saksam, in the Indian village of Shivgarh. The program trained skilled health care workers
[00:06:26] in caring for newborn babies. Shivgarh is a new tarpour dash, an extremely poor area with such a high
[00:06:33] infant mortality rate that it accounts for 10% of all newborn deaths worldwide. In 2010, seven years
[00:06:40] after she first started funding the program, French Gates first visited Shivgarh to see for
[00:06:44] herself the impact of Dr. Kumar's work and was warmly welcomed. Just after a large gathering,
[00:06:50] a six-year-old boy came with his family to greet French Gates. This little boy was one of the
[00:06:55] rescued babies from the Saksam project. When he was born, his mother passed out from exhaustion.
[00:07:02] By the time the community trained health worker Ruchi arrived, the boy was cold and his
[00:07:07] family was too frightened to know what to do. Ruchi wrapped the baby in a blanket and held it
[00:07:12] against her body to transfer heat. After a while, the child regained normal body temperature
[00:07:17] and cried out with vigor. The entire village learned the story and became aware of the importance
[00:07:23] of midwives, maternal and child health, and many women wanted to learn about the customs that
[00:07:27] were new to their culture, but that could save lives without being expensive or new technology.
[00:07:33] Besides fertility and health issues, women also face inequalities and marriages,
[00:07:38] such as unpaid labor while keeping a household. Many married women put in daily hard work but
[00:07:43] never earned the respect or attention that they deserve. French Gates had heard the story of
[00:07:48] Compa, a 22-year-old mother who lived with her husband, parents-in-law, and three children
[00:07:53] in a village in India. One day, the head of the Foundation's India office went to Compa's home
[00:07:59] with health workers to treat her two-year-old daughter Ronnie, who they had heard was suffering from
[00:08:03] severe and potentially life-threatening malnutrition, to treat it only required two weeks of treatment
[00:08:08] at a specific health center, which was two hours away, to restore her health. But Compa's father-in-law
[00:08:14] would not allow her to take Ronnie in for treatment because there would be no one in the family to
[00:08:18] cook if Compa left since she would have to stay with Ronnie the whole time. The health workers
[00:08:23] repeatedly stressed to the father-in-law that his granddaughter would die if she did not receive
[00:08:28] treatment, yet he refused to allow them to go. Eventually the health workers took Ronnie to
[00:08:33] the treatment center without her mother. Many women faced similar situations to Compa's.
[00:08:39] They have no autonomy in their marriages and never received any credit or compensation for
[00:08:44] doing work in and for the home. French Gates writes that women around the world spend, on average,
[00:08:49] twice the amount of time than men on unpaid labor. If women were able to do less unpaid work in
[00:08:55] marriage, they would be able to participate in more paid work and gain economic income as well
[00:09:00] as social status. On a visit to the Republic of Malawi, French Gates set quietly at a meeting with
[00:09:06] many men and women in a circle, hosted by a local group with the aim of revealing marital
[00:09:10] inequality. A leader from that group drew a clock on paper and asked the attendees to talk through
[00:09:16] their daily schedules. The result was that the women had a busier schedule than the men, but the
[00:09:21] men were never aware. They didn't realize their wives did so much in each day. This activity helped
[00:09:28] many men understand what their partners were going through every day and encouraged the men to
[00:09:32] share responsibilities. A man named Gary Barker established a group called MenCare which calls on
[00:09:38] men to help with more things at home. MenCare provides statistics that show that men who share
[00:09:43] housework with their wives are happier, have better family relationships, and have happier children.
[00:09:49] A lot of times people don't realize that inequality exists and things can only be changed when
[00:09:54] someone stands up and shows that it is happening. This has been the first part of the moment of
[00:09:59] lift. We learned about the difficulties women encounter in marriage, mainly in three aspects,
[00:10:05] reproductive autonomy, maternal and child health and unpaid labor. The solution to these problems
[00:10:11] that French Gates is pursuing is to provide women with medical facilities and resources and
[00:10:16] to consciously support women and give them the courage to speak up and overcome social stigma.
